Sous Jardinier

On the weekend - Sunday actually, as Saturday was 34C - we planted some Cos lettuce, replacing the broccoli (which had been riddled with green grubs from white butterflies), and Butterbeans, replacing the Cauliflower, which were a wonderful grow, even though son-in-law said they were not full of home-grown flavour.
Mama has a "sous chef", so I now have a "sous jardinier". She is not the most gentle of gardeners, and is loathe to take advice, but she did not step on any of them, and it was an easy task to simply adjust them later.

In large (plastic) pots I also planted a "Jap" pumpkin, and an apple cucumber. The pumpkin, to Kirsten's astonishment, will be ready for harvest come autumn.

In the garden, at the moment, we have:
podding peas,
snow peas,
green beans,
butter beans,
spring onions,
carrots (my nemesis!),
tomatoes,
lettuce,
lebanese cucumbers,
apple cucumbers,
capsicum,
silverbeet (spinach),
dutch cream potatoes,
kipfler potatoes,
Jap pumpkin, and
zucchini.
The only other thing I can think of is radish, and I know just the pot. Shame is is not popular in this household.

Kids in the Garden | The Bush

My childhood home stood in a street that ended where the bush began. We could enter Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park there or by descending steps from the other end of the street.

Today we introduced Alannah to the "secret track" at the end of our street. She was delighted.

She scouted for monsters up ahead and trolls under bridges. Sometimes she led and sometimes Darren did.

It was a good 20 minute descent to the water of Crag Cove and she walked the entire distance. When she wasn't skipping or running.

The bay was beautiful. At least half a dozen boats were anchored there. We could also see a number of houses and wondered if you could drive down to the other side or if the houses are only accessible by water.

On the way back, an ascent of about 35 minutes, she was carried twice. To keep her going, we played 'hide and seek' or 'I spy'. When she filled her cheeks with water, it reminded me of Tidalijk the Frog and I started to tell her the story. It distracted her until I realised I had forgotten which animal made him laugh and why - a crucial oversight!

Kids in the garden | Painting

Alannah likes to work in the garden with Dadda. Last weekend, I set her up with her easel, paints and chalk in the sunshine. Close to him, but not too close...

Kids in the garden | Wiggerly Woo

Each day of the Easter long weekend, they dug in the front garden. Grass gave way to earth.  Earth gave way to long tangles of tree roots.

And the roots gave way to worms that wriggled and writhed in her fingers.

Bless ABC's cotton socks for scheduling its gardening theme on Playschool last week. She danced and sang Wiggerly Woo on the newly turned soil.
